10. See Tom Petty live

A year and a half after the fact I’ve decided to bother my arse to write about seeing Tom Petty live. It’s brief and I may sneak it into 2012

I was quite drunk and surprisingly made it to the O2, despite crossing the road when I was right outside it. When I got in I went straight to the merch stand and got myself a Dam the Torpedoes t-shirt. During the support act I drunkenly disappeared and wandered around the O2, buying and eating two hotdogs in the process. I found the collective at the right of the stage and remained for the rest of the evening.

Patrick and I (with a giant Brazilian flag)

Before the show I got told off by a bouncer for holding a giant Brazilian flag – fair enough, people wouldn’t be able to see – but a during the show came storming at me looking for a flag and a conversation developed

“Where’s the flag?”
“What flag”
“Where’s the flag?”
“What flag?”
“Where’s the flag?”
“He doesn’t have a fucking flag!”

He then dutifully fucked off.

Dublin view. Pretty accurate as I had no glasses

The show was good fun despite being near sour wankers who don’t like to bop about at a gig and with no glasses my vision was blurry.

Cork: 8/6/2012 – The Marquee

I drunk slightly less than the night before and managed to remember my glasses. Despite it being the exact same show I enjoyed Cork a lot more than Dublin as i) I remembered my glasses ii) I wasn’t as steaming iii) I wasn’t surrounded by sour wankers. I even managed to shimmy up to the front by the end.

Heartbreakers

We walked back into town and en route some random stranger gave Patrick a Mike Campbell pick.

Isle of Wight was a horrible muddy time altogether. Tom Petty was playing on the Friday night which wasn’t as rainy and miserable as the Saturday night, though the ground was still very muddy!

Seen Elbow before hand and I wasn’t fussed in the slightest.

Petty came on and again played, essentially, the same show as before. The only difference was he played “Don’t come around here no more” and I could hear Patrick behind me shout “YEAH! Dave Stewart!”. There were big screens (well, only one was working) so was able to see even more. Petty’s left hand was noticeably shaking, however it didn’t seem to affect his playing.

Halfway through we went towards the back of the crowd – I think Leona was feeling sick and needed water. One guy pissed me off as he refused to let me through (despite my politeness) and insisted I walk infront of him (this, didn’t make a lick of sense – and still doesn’t – obviously walking in front of him would block his view!), so in a rare act of aggression I shouldered through him and turned round and said “Fuck you, you beret wearing prick”. Looking back it was a ludicrous insult (but accurate). I walked on but I was really pissed off. I’m normally Johnny Laid Back so I was surprised by I was so riled – probably because Leona was ill and the prick was stopping us from walking back.
I was still pissed off afterwards so marred the rest of the show for me – the whole being knee deep in mud didn’t help.

Epilogue
Cork was my favourite show of the three.
